There, across the river from Manhattan, William Steinway also established a village with housing for his workers, which gave him some control, as he could evict anyone who went on strike. Eager to get their employees away from the anarchists and socialists who were “continually breeding discontent among our workmen and inciting them to strike,” according to William Steinway, one of Henry’s sons, the family constructed a complex, including a foundry and sawmill, on 400 acres in the lightly populated Astoria section of Queens, New York. By 1870, the thriving Steinway & Sons needed more space, but the company’s success had also made it a target of labor agitators. Although the strike was short-lived, it marred the community’s idyllic image. In 1937, Hershey chocolate factory workers organized the company’s first labor union and went on strike. Efforts were made by Hershey and his executives to police employees’ behavior when they were off the clock, and company managers were accused by some workers of showing favoritism when it came to wages and hiring practices. During the Great Depression, he launched a building campaign that kept hundreds of people employed and resulted in the addition of a large hotel, sports arena and other public structures to his model town.ĭespite Hershey’s altruism and his chocolate-scented community’s many amenities, life in “the sweetest place on Earth” wasn’t entirely sweet. ![]() In 1909, Hershey, who was childless and had a limited formal education, established a local boarding school for orphaned boys. With streets named Chocolate and Cocoa avenues, the new town featured a wide variety of affordable, modern homes that workers could rent or own, a trolley system, public schools, social clubs, an amusement park and zoo. Due to the remote location of the factory, Hershey also constructed a town for his employees, intending it as an industrial utopia that reflected his progressive beliefs. He built a factory complex near his birthplace in rural Pennsylvania, in part because the area’s dairy farms offered access to an ample supply of milk. In 1900, Milton Hershey sold the successful caramel candy business he’d founded in order to become a pioneer in the mass production of milk chocolate. Hershey, Pennsylvania: A chocolate king’s industrial utopia Soon afterward, Pullman was slated for demolition however, it eluded that fate after residents protested and survive today. The following year, the Illinois Supreme Court ordered the Pullman Co. When the railway car magnate died in 1897, his coffin was buried under layers of concrete and steel so no one could desecrate his body. In response to an economic downturn in 1894, Pullman cut jobs and wages while refusing to reduce rents, sparking a violent workers’ strike that ended only after federal troops were sent in. Saloons and town meetings were banned and Pullman even had the final say on which books the library stocked and what performances the theater put on. Workers, allowed only to rent their homes, could be evicted on short notice and faced random inspections by officials. The community won national accolades and by 1893 had 12,000 residents however, some who lived there chafed under Pullman’s iron rule. Residences had yards, indoor plumbing, gas and daily trash removal, rare amenities for industrial workers of that era. The town featured more than 1,000 homes, public buildings and parks. He intended for his planned community to help prevent labor unrest, attract a skilled workforce and increase employee productivity by providing a clean, orderly environment away from the vice-filled big city. In 1884, George Pullman completed the construction of a new manufacturing complex and town on 4,000 acres of land south of Chicago for the employees of his flourishing Pullman Palace Car Co., founded in 1867 to build luxury railroad sleeping cars. The terrain was rough, with climbs so steep you had to use ropes tied to trees to pull yourself along, but we made it through and didn’t see a single plant that was supposed to grow there. ![]() I call it electric blue and I really can’t think of another blue to compare it to, but it’s beautiful.įor years I’ve heard of a very special place up in the woods of Westmoreland where endangered orchids, squawroot, hepatica, Dutchman’s breeches, maiden hair fern and other plants that love a lot of lime in the soil grow, so over Memorial day my daughter and I decided to pay this special place a visit. It’s been described as porcelain blue but it’s hard to put a name to it. I like seeing both the flowers and the blue berries that follow them. It’s easy to see that blue bead lilies are in the lily family they look just like small Canada lilies. The two plants like the same conditions and often grow side by side. Isn’t evolution amazing?Īt a glance the leaves of blue bead lilies ( Clintonia borealis) are often mistaken for those of lady’s slippers, but lady’s slipper leaves are deeply pleated and blue bead lily leaves are not, they’re smooth like those seen here. The flower’s stigma is also located above the exit holes and if the bee carries pollen from another lady’s slipper it will be deposited on the sticky stigma as it escapes the pouch, and fertilization will have been successful. Just above each hole the flower has positioned a pollen packet so once the bee crawls through the hole it is dusted with pollen. There is only one way out for a bee trapped in a lady’s slipper blossom guide hairs inside the flower point the way to the top of the pouch or slipper, and once the bee reaches the top it finds two holes big enough to fit through. Once inside they discover that they’re trapped and can’t get out the way they came in. They enter the flower through the center slit in the pouch, which can be seen here. Many different insects pollinate orchids but in lady’s slippers bees do the job. They’re one of our most beautiful native orchids and everyone should have a chance to see them.īotanically orchids are considered the most highly evolved of all flowering plants because of their unique reproductive strategy they have both male and female reproductive structures fused into a single structure. If plants are dug up and placed in private gardens they will die if the fungus isn’t present so please, look at them, take a couple of photos, and let them be. The plant interacts with a Rhizoctonia fungus in the soil and this fungus must be present for it to reproduce. I’m so glad that this native orchid is making a comeback after being collected nearly into oblivion by people who didn’t know any better. I thought I’d start this flower post where I left off in the last one and show you pink lady’s slippers ( Cypripedium acaule) in full bloom. ![]() ![]() ![]() Some had to risk their lives to save their comrades trapped in the flames. From its creation, this cross was therefore associated with Christian warriors and knights.Īlthough the Christian cross of the Order of the Knights Templar and that of Malta are different, they have a past, and therefore a meaning, in common. Its roots are actually found in the crosses of the Knights Templar, itself derived from the flag of the Republic of Amalfi (a merchant state located on the southwest coast of Italy). History and Origin of the Cross of MaltaĪlthough the use of the Maltese cross was popularized in the 16th century by the Order of the Knights Hospitaller, it actually dates back to the early 11th century. On the walls of the buildings, the rooms, the jewels: in a short time, the symbol of the Maltese cross was everywhere. In the course of their history, the Hospitallers have settled in Malta and brought their cross with them. Be that as it may, this Christian symbol is no longer limited today to the island of Malta: countries all over the world use it as a decoration to represent courage and honor. The creed offered by the Maltese Cross would therefore be, in a way, the ultimate goal towards which every fighter in Christendom should strive. Others will see there the eight obligations of the knight: honesty, faith, repentance, humility, justice, mercy, benevolence and resilience. Some say that the ends of the cross symbolize the multitude of the lands of origin of the knights who made up the order. Thus the flag of the Maltese cross shows it drawn in red on a white background. About its colors, it is usually represented in black and white, or in red and white. The symbol of the Maltese cross can be considered a more sophisticated version of the famous Greek cross, a model of the Christian cross with four branches of equal length. Its shape is therefore perfectly symmetrical, whether seen horizontally or vertically. These four forms, when put together, form a kind of eight-pointed flower. With its "V's" at the ends, the Maltese cross resembles a kind of star shape. We can find it, for example, as the logo of the national airline Air Malta, or as a cross on the Maltese Euro.įrom a purely aesthetic point of view, it consists of four arrowheads with the ends joined in one point. Since then, this model of the Catholic cross has been widely associated with Malta. It is this order that governed the Maltese islands between 15. This religious military order of the Middle Ages was the first order of knighthood to be created.
